You won’t have any problem finding a pub, bar or restaurant in Cologne. Check out the student district Kwartier Latäng, Friesenviertel, Belgisches Viertel, Südstadt and Ehrenfeld, a traditional industrial quarter. Prices are surprisingly reasonable for a city this size, and happy hour often lasts all day. Once you find an inviting place, make sure to try some of the following Rheinland specialties:

Halber Hahn (Half chicken). Don't be disappointed if you don't get what you expected, a half a chicken. Instead you'll receive a buttered rye roll, halved and topped with Gouda cheese and mustard served with pickles and onions.

Reibekuchen or Kartoffelpuffer: Grated potato cakes popular in all areas of Germany, but they are most famous in the Rheinland.

Sauerbraten, literally translated as "sour roast," is made by marinating a beef roast in a sour-sweet marinade for 2 to 3 days before browning it, then simmering the meat in the marinade for several hours, resulting in a very tender roast and a delicious sauce.

Rhineland Sauerbraten is generally sweeter than in other regions as it contains raisins and gingerbread. The key to an authentic Sauerbraten is time: the roast must marinate for three to four days before being cooked. Sauerbraten is traditionally served with dumplings, boiled potatoes or noodles.

Kölsch is a top-fermented clear beer, which is brewed locally. It is the palest of German beers and has a slightly fruity flavor. Only breweries in and around Cologne are allowed to call their beer Kölsch. Kölsch is being served in the signature 0.2 liter glasses called Stangen.

Whether you are looking for haute cuisine or a casual dining experience, the offer from the pubs, bars and restaurants in Cologne is enormous. Check out a few of our favorites and make yourself comfortable amongst locals and travelers from all over the word.
