Upon check-in at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on Hawaii Island, guests are offered an icy cool cloth to soothe away travel weariness alongside a glass of tangy passion-orange juice. We enjoyed ours in the sleek open-air lobby, watching sailboats breeze by on the water.

With a nod to simple plantation style décor, guest rooms are spacious and tasteful. Louvered doors open out onto a roomy lanai, perfect for enjoying a lazy afternoon in the island breeze. The bedding is stellar – crisp cotton sheets top off an incredibly comfortable king or queen-sized bed. Start the in-room coffee maker, step outside the door to pick up the complimentary newspaper and curl up under the covers for a lazy morning. You’re on vacation, after all.

The hotel is situated on the famed Kohala Coast where the sun shines almost daily, so the pool is an obvious attraction. So too is adjacent Hapuna Beach, which has been repeatedly named “best beach” by travel magazines and websites over the years. Guests can lounge on beach chairs under an umbrella or stroll the length of the famous sands.

There are several dining options on site, but we loved Hakone Buffet, featuring Japanese cuisine. There are plenty of dining options within a few miles of the resort, too. The Blue Dragon Restaurant in Kawaihae serves locally sourced fare and has a regular entertainment calendar that’s worth checking out.
