Maui dining brings fresh food to your table

Most visitors to the Valley Isle will spend a fair amount of time in west Maui where casual and fine dining abound. For an easy lunch or dinner, try Mama’s Ribs and Rotisserie for barbecue, Pita Paradise for sandwiches and salads, or Jawz Tacos, available from two lunch wagons or a storefront in Kihei.

The Pacific Rim cuisine at Five Palms Restaurant in Kihei or Roy’s in Kaanapali is stellar. One of the top restaurants on Maui is the Pineapple Grill in Napili. For a little touch of Hollywood, try Mala in the Wailea Beach Marriot, featuring Hawaiian regional cuisine made with organic ingredients. Part owners of Mala include actor Clint Eastwood and rock star Alice Cooper. Fans of Hawaiian music will want to make reservations for dinner at the Sea House Restaurant at the Napili Kai Hotel, where Grammy-winning artist George Kahumoku, Jr. presents his weekly Slack Key Show.

In the artsy town of Paia, start your day with pastries from Anthony’s Coffee Company, head to the Flatbread Company for some awesome pizza (with excellent gluten free options), or grab dessert at the Ono Gelato Company. If you’re a fan of natural foods, the non-descript Mana Foods is worth a stop for picnic supplies before you head toward Hana. Mama’s Fish House just outside of Paia town offers fine dining right on the water.

Upcountry Maui has a couple of good options, too. In Makawao, stop for lunch or dinner at Polli’s Mexican Restaurant and then head to T. Komoda Store and Bakery for their famous cream puffs. In Kula, Grandma’s Maui Coffee is open early, serving coffee, tea, and baked goods to visitors heading to the top of Haleakala.

If you want to experience a Hawaiian luau, try the Old Lahaina Luau or Te Au Moana in Wailea. Sample dishes like kalua pig, lau lau, chicken long rice, poi, and poke, along with a Polynesian dinner show.

Maui locals will tell you that you must try the ice cream at the Tasaka Guri Guri Shop in the Maui Mall, so save room for dessert!
