Vancouver Island is among the best wine producing regions in Canada, with its warm and sunny summers and mild winters combined with well-suited clay and gravelly soils. Most of the vineyards are located on the Saanich Peninsula, north of BC’s capital Victoria, and in the south Cowichan Valley, in the rolling countryside along the highway 1 corridor on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

Organized winery tour

The easiest way to get a taste of the great wines produced in this region is to go on a winery tour. This saves you from having to make your own selection of wineries to visit, contacting them to make sure that they are open for visitors and making your own transportation arrangements. Various local companies offer half day and full day tours, which usually include pick-up from your hotel, or from central locations in Victoria. A tour of the vineyards, tasting fees and transportation are included in the tour price. The full day tours include time for lunch at one of the wineries’ bistros or a gourmet picnic lunch, which may or may not be included in the tour price.

Your tour may make a stop at one of the cider houses in the region, where you can learn more about the history of apple cider in North America and the artisanal production process, and you get a chance to sample various types of ciders.

Individual winery tour

If you prefer to visit some wineries on your own, of course you have the advantage of being able to take your time and have the freedom of changing your plans at any time. Do call ahead though to make sure that the winery of your choice is open for visitors.

Other attractions:

The fertile agricultural land in the Cowichan Valley and the Saanich Peninsula also offers the best in locally grown produce, and thanks to the proximity to the ocean there is fresh seafood in abundance. So be sure to enjoy some top gourmet cuisine – of course with a glass of wine! - in local restaurants on Vancouver Island.

The spectacular natural environment is equally fertile ground for a variety of artists, and a tour of some of the many art galleries will likely leave you with some pieces of art that will become part of your treasured memories of this wonderful region.

The area is great for various outdoor activities, such as golf, swimming or kayaking in lakes or rivers, hiking, cycling and horseback riding.
